Questions

Good to know before you choose

I'm under 30. Do I really need medical aid?

A hospital plan is the most affordable way to protect yourself against a large hospital bill after an accident or sudden illness. Joining young also avoids late-joiner penalties, which schemes can add if you first join after age 35.

What is a network plan?

A network plan asks you to use a set list of hospitals or doctors. In return your monthly contribution is lower. If you live near a network hospital, it is often the best value.

Why do some plans ask for my income?

Income-based plans such as Discovery KeyCare, Bonitas BonCap, Bestmed Rhythm and Momentum Ingwe charge less if you earn less. Schemes verify income when you join.

Is there a waiting period?

If you have not had medical aid in the last 90 days, a scheme can apply a general waiting period of up to 3 months and a 12-month waiting period for existing conditions. Emergencies and PMBs are still covered in most cases.

Does Med Select sell medical aid?

No. Med Select is an information service. We show you how plans compare so you can make your own choice. Always check the official scheme brochure before joining.
